It is generally accepted that the cucumber was first cultivated in India approximately 3,000 years ago. Roman emperor Tiberius is said to have been particularly fond of cucumbers. According to Pliny the Elder’s writings, Tiberius had portable planting beds constructed so the cucumber plants could be moved to always be exposed to the best sunlight. In winter they were moved indoors where mirrorstone glazed panels exposed the plants to sunlight.
Today, 80 million tons of cucumbers are harvested annually, and are a regular offering on tables around the world.
Nature.com recently published a study from Scientific Reports on the impact of light on cucumber plant yield. The study includes analysis of the effects of LED full spectrum grow lights on cucumber plants. The report notes that the proper application of full spectrum LED light has been associated with increased plant productivity in studies located in densely populated areas as well as in space.
